Before turning on the power, make sure that the document cover is closed. *Edit: I should also mention, I have this EXACT same printer model at my sister's computer and it gives the same exact error but she has Ink in hers, just in case that helps anything further. So I'm out of ideas and could really use some help or just brainstorming some ideas so I can try something else, the Canon website is very unhelpful and it seems like there tech support is non-existent. Tried changing USB cables to a different one(was taking a long shot with this one) Restarted Computer (also I have no files that are waiting to be printed or anything) -Uninstalled the drivers and programs and then reinstalled them with the original CD that came with my Printer -Got the newest driver from the Canon website for my specific model -Took out the inks and re-input them in to try and get the printer portion going(I believe the inks are empty but I am not trying to print I just want to use the scanner on top but it seems like they may be connected to one another in some way) -tried several of the suggested forms of "restarting" it by holding the reset button, or the on/off button, or the repair button, or some of them together simultaneously. Here is what I have tried so far and none of them worked. Also many of this same problem had not been resolved so it seems to be something that people get. So, I have searched the fixit forums and google on help on this issue and tried several of the suggestions mentioned but they did not help. I have had this printer for about 2 years for some time reference but rarely used it. Now, I have used this printer before and scanned on it multiple times in the past so it was working at one point. It isn't even going through the motions of Scanning, just starts to load then nothing happens and this message comes up.
